Advanced Standing FAQ
Can current students apply for the advanced standing program?
No, the advanced standing program is only for new incoming MSW@USC students.
Can I apply for the advanced standing program if I don’t have a bachelor’s degree in social work, but I have years of experience in the field?
No, only graduates of baccalaureate programs in social work from a Council on Social Work Education-accredited school are eligible to apply for advanced standing.
Can I transfer credits from another graduate program?
No. Applicants who have graduate credits from another CSWE-accredited MSW program should consider our traditional MSW program and consult our policies highlighted under Transfer Applicants.
What are the requirements for international applicants?
The advanced standing program is not available for international students, except Canadian applicants. However, enrollment for Canadian students is contingent upon securing viable placement sites.
Do I need to take the GRE?
No, the GRE is not required for admission to the advanced standing program.
What is the application deadline?
We will be accepting applications until all available seats are taken. Once a class is full, applications will be accepted for the next available start date. Priority will be given to students who apply early.
If admitted, can I defer my enrollment?
No, we do not grant deferments.
Can I pursue a dual degree?
No, dual-degree options are not available for advanced standing students.
How frequently is the program offered?
We offer multiple start dates; please refer to our next application deadlines and start dates.
How long will it take me to complete the MSW program?
Advanced standing students can complete the full-time program in three semesters or five semesters on a part-time basis.
Am I eligible for scholarships and financial aid?
Yes. Full-time advanced standing students are considered for scholarships and notified if awarded. To ensure maximum financial aid eligibility, complete all documents by the deadlines posted, regardless of your admission status.
Does the school provide orientation for advanced standing students?
All advanced standing students will have a formal orientation prior to their bridge courses.
What if I do not pass the summer bridge courses?
Students who do not pass the fall bridge courses will be automatically removed from the advanced standing program. However, they may enroll in the full-time or part-time/full-time traditional MSW program.
