I was a MSW student at USC’s Virtual Academic Center for a year and a half. I was 9 weeks away from graduating when I was removed from the program. The people in field placement especially the director did not do her job effectively in locating an agency in my city of New York for over 3 months. Instead of taking the responsibility that she and her staff had been ineffective in performing their job, she suggested that I graduate in August versus May 2012 so that I would have accrued all the hours I needed in my internship to graduate.
After suffering through countless weeks and then months with this an ongoing frustration, I went above her to the Dean and Vice Dean and let them know that not only myself, but many other students were having problems with field placement. Their response? To sanction me and have me removed from the program 9 weeks before I was due to graduate with my MSW. Was I reimbursed for any of the money that they took? Not a penny. Did I receive my degree considering all the debt I am now in for no reason? No. Did all of my classmates sign a petition that went to the Dean insisting that I be reinstated? Yes, they did, to which not even the decency of a reply was given.
USC’s online program is the biggest scam any well-known university could be pulling. They misrepresent themselves by assuring all incoming students that they have connections in every state, even oversea’s with agencies where the students can complete their foundation and concentration year internships. In fact, they have no such thing. If I live in New York City and for over 3 months they could not find me a placement, heaven help the student who lives in a remote area.
I paid a kings ransom in tuition and fees for the field placement which should have never been charged to my account considering they did not do their job. I wrote to everyone and called to try and get assistance from someone who could help me with what was going on, I did not receive the decency of a return call, an email, a letter or even a text, nothing. I was discarded as though I was garbage and immediately removed from any type of access to anything concerning the school. I barely was able to get an email sent to my classmates and professor’s to let them know what happened and say good-bye before they shut down my account.
I feel  very sorry for incoming students who do not know what they are getting into, for students who are dealing with all types of problems and have no-one to talk to or support them. I would never recommend USC to anyone, quite the opposite I would tell anyone considering going there to reconsider and do your homework so that you know they misrepresent themselves at every turn and should you ever do the slightest thing that rubs any of the professors or administration the wrong way, you will find yourself thrown out of the program before the day is done. You will have no recourse, be in a tremendous amount of debt and no degree to show for any of it. They will have forgotten your name and have moved on to the next poor victim before you will have even been able to process what has happened.
I have heard personally from a great number of students from the VAC program that are very unhappy with the treatment they are receiving, the lack of placement opportunities, the things they were promised when they enrolled that are now non-existent and are basically at a loss over what to do. My advice is go to a university that knows your name, that values you as a student, that reads your emails, or listens to your calls and replies, and never ever settle for walking away with over $120,000.00 in debt because you did what you were always told to do which was speak up if something was not going right.
I did that, and instead of receiving the help I should have, I was removed from the program. I hope I have been able to help even one person considering this school as an option to understand what they are getting into. There are many other wonderful universities that charge a quarter of the price that USC does and delivers exactly the same education and even supports their students. Don’t waste your money, time or dreams on a school that is a total scam and fraud. Good luck to you all. I wish you the very best.
